Schools | Energy Management
School buildings and their energy systems are excellent teaching resources. They are readily accessible, always available and free.
As well as the fabric of the roof, ceilings, walls and floor, there is the central heating system, boiler house, lighting, catering and office equipment, together with their control, monitoring and safety systems.
As a result of simple investigations, pupils often recommend possible improvements or suggest aspects for further investigation. If school managers respond appropriately to these proposals, then the pupils will see that the wise use of energy is not just a topic they have to study, but one that has applications in the real world and has relevance to the comfort of their working conditions.
Furthermore, active involvement in the management of energy is a practical expression of pupils' general concern for the environment. It satisfies and re-inforces the requirements of national curricular guidelines.
Better energy management can lead to improvements in comfort for pupils and teachers, making condition more conducive to teaching and learning.
There are also financial savings to be made. Most schools can reduce energy costs by at least 10% with no investment, and without curtailing facilities, reducing comfort or compromising safety. Investment in upgrading energy systems and controls can lead to greater savings. Reducing energy bills means that there is more cash for core educational activities. Can schools not afford to make a start?
From January 2006, large buildings, including schools, will have to obtain and display a valid certificate that describes their energy performance and assesses their energy efficiency. (EC Directive 2002/91: The Energy Performance of Buildings). Why not start now making progress towards achieving the standards?
