Power from poo

Thames Water has recently announced that in 2008/09 it saved 15m pounds in electricity bills by generating its own renewable power from its 13.6 million customers' poo. The company generated a 14 per cent of its power needs from either burning sewage sludge or methane derived from it.

Two years ago CREATE produced an education resource on Poo Power for the water companies. The activities help pupils to realise the potential for biogas, to recognise that poo can be used as a source of energy to generate electricity and to become aware that animal and human waste is used in many countries as a source of energy.
